Want to check whether AI recommends your business? Start with these five prompts. Don't just ask ChatGPT whether it knows your brand. Test the kinds of questions a potential customer might actually ask. 1. The recommendation test "Which companies offer [your service] in [your location]?" 2. The best-of test "What are the best [type of business] for [specific customer need]?" 3. The comparison test "Compare [your brand] with [competitor] for [specific service]." 4. The problem-solving test "I'm struggling with [customer problem]. Which companies or services should I consider?" 5. The buyer-intent test "I'm looking to hire a [service provider] in [location]. What should I look for, and which companies are worth considering?" Replace the brackets with your actual service, market, and competitors. Then record: Whether your brand appears Which competitors appear Which sources the answer references Whether the answer changes when you repeat the test One important caveat: a single AI answer isn't a reliable measure of overall visibility. One thing has been bothering me lately. We have tools to track how a brand performs on Google. But what happens when someone skips Google and asks ChatGPT: “Which company should I hire?” “What’s the best agency for this?” “Who are the top companies in this industry?” The answer isn’t a traditional search ranking. It’s an AI-generated answer. And I think we’re going to need a completely different way to understand that visibility. That’s one of the reasons I started building Beacon. It’s still early. Very early. But I’m trying to figure out whether this is actually useful before I spend months building it. Tuesday afternoon, whiteboard covered in half-erased notes, someone's brought in snacks nobody asked for, and we're three hours into arguing about a single client's content angle. This is the part nobody posts about. Not the results. The messy middle where four people disagree about the right call and none of us are wrong exactly, just looking at the same problem from a different angle. We landed on an approach eventually. Took longer than it should've. Worth it anyway.

A client told me last month their old agency measured success by how many posts went out that week. Not leads. Not revenue. Post count. That's not a strategy. That's activity dressed up as one. Unpopular opinion: more content does not equal more sales. I've watched businesses post five times a day and generate less pipeline than a competitor posting twice a week with something actually worth reading. Volume isn't the variable that matters. Relevance is. Same goes for followers. A page with 40,000 followers and no real buyer in that number is worth less than a page with 2,000 people who are actually the audience. I'd take the smaller, sharper list every time. If your content plan is measured in output instead of outcome, you don't have a content strategy. You have a content habit.
